Hello beautiful people!

Tomorrow I am officially, *officially* on vacation.. hooray!  I feel like this has been a long time coming, esp. with how crazy insane work has been lately!  & because I knew I wanted a 100% stress free work trip, I managed to finish about 85% of all my orders (I’m talking 200+ orders filled in about 5 days) and finalized a ton of branding and design projects.  I’ve been stressed and working myself to the bone the last week, but I’m feeling pretty elated right now knowing that so much of my work has been taken care of.  Even if I know this is only temporary bliss.. I’ll still take it. <3

Aside from that, I finally picked up a brand spanking new heatpress machine.  I mean, this thing is ginormous and I don’t think I was fully prepared for it’s awesomeness.  I’ve always been interested in heatpress and I’ve faked it a few times (you know, hardcore ironing skills), but I figured I would invest in something substantial while I could.  So I stayed up one night, read a million reviews and comparisons and ended up on a machine that was roughly $500+.  It’s not the best on the market but it’ll do for what I want.  Needless to say, I kind of can’t stop playing with it… pictures below:

I use muslin bags for a lot of my packaging, and this was when the machine first came.  I was trying to heatpress some little hearts inside the hearts… haha.  Obviously this was just a test :)

Heatpressed my fav Rifle Paper Co. design into a tote – for personal use, not for resale.  Hooray!

My shop is huge on bachelorette parties, and this was one of the reasons I wanted the press.  These treat bags are so stinkin’ cute… I am so excited to sell my first batch!

And then I made a tote for my sister with her photography logo…

And then I found some sandals on sale for $1.25 at Joann’s and figured they were probably easily pressed.. and I was right! haha.  I think I may end up pressing anything and everything around my house…

Anyone else as obsessive as I am?  I get a new machine and I’m obsessed for a few weeks, and then it’s on to the next.  Really hoping this won’t be the case here. :)  Also can’t wait to print my first tshirts.. when I return from vacation!

Happy Sunday, loves!

So umm.. hi.

Let’s be honest, I avoid this blog like the plague.  Literally.  I’m so indecisive when it comes to the look/ feel of this site that I just ignore it.  Forgive me for my many disappearing acts. :)

Aside from my crazy month-long silences, work has been amazing and I’ve done more work than I have even anticipated for my first year of self-employment.  I am so proud of myself, so happy, so delirious with joy, but I’m also super overwhelmed.. all the time.  I feel like I’ve done nothing but work for the last 3 months straight, day and night and night and day.  Don’t get me wrong – there have also been tons of amazing days, but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that it’s been hard.

Despite all of that, I’ve done some work that I’m super proud of.  Lots of branding and logo projects (my ultimate favorite!) – I’ll update with pictures when I have the energy to search for them :).  Lots of paper goods, primarily bachelorette & wedding, and lots and LOTS of lettering gigs.  Mostly permanent tattoos, which I think is kind of awesome.  Makes me want to letter something to have tattoo’d on my own body, but that will probably never happen, haha.

But life is good.  Extremely good, and I feel blessed all the time.  I’m just tired. <3

Wedding Season!

Don’t mind that I’m not on this blog too much, it means that I’m swimming in work (which is always a good thing) & that I’m out enjoying the sunshine.  Yes, sunshine (here in rainy Seattle)!

To be honest, I had an “omg why did I leave my career” moment this week.  In fact, it was yesterday night.  If you know me personally, then you know that my car is always *always* in the shop.  For no real good reason actually, since it’s always aesthetic things that I’m fixing.  It’s been a very reliable car, but the upkeep is just getting out of hand.  2 weeks ago I took it in to get my brakes repaired and last night it started leaking green stuff all over my driveway.  Needless to say, not driving anywhere today. :)

Aside from my car costing way too much to fix and too often & it causing me to freak out a bit, work is good.  No, work is great.  I still can’t believe it’s almost mid way through the year & I’ve been able to pay my bills (haha!), upkeep my life, go out, expand my business..  So so grateful & blessed.

But yes, definitely wedding season.  I feel like 90% of what I work on these days are for future brides, which I love, but I also crave the creativity of things outside of that scope.  Thankfully I have some logo & branding projects on the table.

Until next time,xo!

Around here lately..

Work & life has been crazy.  We got a pretty good health scare last week so everything else was just kind of put to the back burner.  I think I’ve prayed more than I have in a long time, and I’ve been seemingly more grateful for the little things.  Without getting into the details of what is or isn’t, all I will say is that I hope things will be okay.  They have to be, right?

Besides all of that, here’s a peek at life around here, lately..

I think I’ve sent out about 100+ of these Bachelorette Party packs this past week.  Definitely wedding season!  Also makes me feel like I should make a pg-13 version, since these are a little crazy.. haha

Though the doctor didn’t necessarily say that Matt needs to eat better… I took it upon myself to make sure that he does.  No more nachos, no more crazy burgers (well, maybe sometimes!), and definitely more breakfast!  I boiled all of these eggs to make sure he eats breakfast every morning and of course, I couldn’t help but ombre them.

Lots of sunshine this week.  The dogs are definitely happy <3

Custom wedding suites finished and out the door!  Wedding season in full effect, can anyone else feel it??

I’ve somehow found a crazy love of decaling/ heat sealing onto ceramics.  Seriously – you don’t want to see my kitchen!  These are so amazing and gorgeous and permanent!  I may do a tutorial soon…

Lots of dog walks.

Custom baby onesies for an old friend.  I actually stopped commissioning these about a year ago, but she asked nicely (lol) and I may think about bringing these back..  who knows.

Other than that, the last few days have been crazy rainy & all I’ve wanted to do is spend time with my little family.  I’m making it a priority to be in the moment more often, instead of just all over the place.

Here’s to another great week.  xo!

Women Entrepreneurs (plus yours truly!)

The best thing about social media is all of the amazing people you would have never gotten a chance to meet – such as Kenia from Pink Creative Studio.  The bad thing about social media is comparison……. but that’s another story.

Kenia and I met via Instagram, which is just too common nowadays.  Soon we learned that we both worked in the same industry – she as a Creative Director and me as a Marketing Manager.  Small world.  She is doing big things, helping women businesses brand and position themselves.  We both agree there needs to be more support for women entrepreneurs, and hopefully someday soon we’ll tackle that together.

In the interim, she had asked me to share my own story.  Honestly can’t even believe I had a story to share… lol.  Follow the link below to read the article <3

I’ve also included the full article below:

Here’s what she had to say…

1. Tell us about your business!
I am the owner of Nguyen Paper Co. & Gold Tinsel, both of which are online paper goods shops. Nguyen Paper Co. is my collection of customizable wedding goods. Gold Tinsel is a print shop full of modern & clean home decor.  Both shops embody my love of typography and modern design.
2. What inspired you to start your own business and why did you choose this particular kind.
For as long as I can remember, I have always loved to design.  When I was younger, designing meant making fake earrings out of plastic flowers, drawing and creating my own paper doll clothing, and melting crayons to create clay molds.
As I got older, I created a career as a Marketing Manager – still design oriented but not necessarily designing. 5 years into my career and I felt an itch to create more than just ad campaigns or marketing strategies.  I wanted to physically make something from scratch.  Dream up an idea and have it in my hands, the way I used to when I was younger.  I started freelancing and the next thing I knew, I was swimming in work.
They say your hobby is no longer a hobby when it becomes more demanding than your full time job.  That’s exactly what happened to me.  It took me nearly 2 years to become comfortable enough to leave my career in order to pursue this full time so it definitely did not happen overnight.  But now I can’t imagine why I never started sooner.
3. What were the challenges you came across in getting it started? What about maintaining it?
The biggest challenge is definitely figuring out who you are as an artist and defining it.  I still struggle with this from time to time.  It’s too easy now with social media to see what is hot and to try to replicate it within your own shop.  I’ve definitely had moments where I needed to be honest with myself about whether or not a design I had made really ‘fit’ who I am aesthetically, and/or whether or not it was brand appropriate.
When you’re a new shop, you’re so worried about sales that you can easily fall into the trap of making what others want – vs. creating pieces that truly stand for who you are as an artist.  Because of this, I limit my social media time.  It’s very important for me to keep my head down and just do my work.
4. What do you love most about what you do?
I love that I’m the boss.  It is SO liberating to wake up in the middle of the night because I’ve been inspired by something as silly as a dream, and then to create that same piece and have it listed the next day.  The turnaround is amazing when you are creating pieces that you love.  Being home with my dogs and working in my pajamas isn’t so bad, either.
5. What advice do you have for other women entrepreneurs who are thinking about starting her own business?
The best advice I can give is to give it all you’ve got.  Working for yourself is by no means easy.  But when you work for yourself – you HAVE to be accountable for what you do and or don’t do.  You need to work harder than you’ve ever worked.  But most of all, if anything at all, you have to remember why you started.  Even during the hardest days, if you remember that much, you’ll make it through anything.
